Band Semester Update, Spring 2007

As the second semester begins I would like to make a change in the that the daily grade is issued.  I will be giving the students points toward their grade for our rehearsals in class. These points be given per rehearsal.  Each rehearsal will count for 10 points as part of the daily work category of their grade which is 20% of their overall grade.  Students will loose these points if they do not have the necessary supplies for class (music, pencil, book) for being disruptive, or talking after being asked to be quiet.

Secondly as a result of deep thought and reflection I have realized that recording music and the capabilities to record music conveniently have become more and more available.  After a quick survey of the band students it has become clear that most students can easily record music to their home computers with little or no cost.  Because effective software can be downloaded for free (Audacity.com) and microphones are very inexpensive ($15 smartmusic.com, $8-$22 at walmart.com.)   Click here to view a PowerPoint presentation on how to make music recordings on your computer. (Click your mouse to advance slides.)

This will allow us to record practice assignments and enable students to email these assignment recordings to my school email where I can grade them.  All of this to me is very exciting and represents an effort to push music education forward with little cost or investment.

Obviously students who don’t have this capability yet or who have been denied computer access right either at home or at school can record their assignments through a tape recorder and then turn in a tape with their name on the tape.

There will be one major assignment that will be recorded at home.  the recording they will make of their solos this semester.  I will have tape recorders they can check out to fulfill this grade.

The importance of this is that it focuses the students practicing and allows them to keep at it until they get it right and turn in a polished performance that they can be proud of.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns
