Scouting for Food

For 2007, we collected food on Monday and Tuesday, October 15th and 16th.   Thanks to the generosity of our community, the Pack collected 988 lbs. of food.  See the history page for a breakout by year and den.

Scouting for Food is a way to teach young scouts "to HELP other people" at all times.  They go door to door through their neighborhood wearing their uniforms and collect food for the hungry.  Adult Leaders and Parent volunteers supervise the collection process, but the boys do the work. This is an opportunity for boys to learn that not everyone is fortunate enough to have good food all the time. It is also a valuable opportunity for them to experience the generosity of their neighbors who donate food, and from that to learn that what they are doing is important.

Scouting for Food is an annual event held during the month of September or October. Our scouts usually leave plastic bags at houses during a designated week asking citizens to fill the bags with non-perishable food items. We then return on Saturday morning of the same week and collect bags filled with food which have been left outside by citizens.

  • Our food drive will support the Goddard Food Bank to distribute food to local families in need for the Thanksgiving season. Families in need come in to the city building or community center and receive about 3 or 4 boxes of mixed food items (40# per box) depending on their family size.
  • Other food drives from schools and community groups (many occur after Thanksgiving) support the Christmas season food distribution and include several gifts for the children as well. Sometimes clothing items (like our coat and mitten drive) are distributed then as well.
