The 177 acre Camp TaWaKoNi had been a part of Quivira Council since 1937. The name TaWaKoNi was given in 1938, after a competition among local Scouting units. The name TaWaKoNi translates roughly to "river bed among red sand hills" and was a name used by a local Indian tribe. The name was suggested by Bob Smith and Jack Moran of Troop 13 of St. Mary's Cathedral.
